About this subject

Career & Freelancing courses

Courses about the working life rather than the work itself: finding a job, negotiating, interviewing, moving into self-employment, and running a freelance or consulting practice. This is the category where marketing claims are strongest and hardest to check, because the promised outcome is the thing the buyer most wants and the thing the course has least control over.

Guidance

How to choose a career or freelancing course

Verification tells you that a course delivers the material it advertises. It cannot tell you whether you will get the job or the client. These are the things worth checking yourself.

Read outcome promises as marketing, not as terms

Hiring and client decisions are made by other people, on evidence that includes your experience, your timing and your market. No course controls any of that. Treat a specific promise about salary, placement or income as a claim to test rather than a benefit to buy, and note that any figure quoted from past students is a selected sample by construction.

Check which labour market it assumes

Employment law, notice periods, contracts, invoicing and tax are national, and interview and application conventions are close to it. A course on freelance contracts or self-employment registration can be entirely correct and about a country you do not work in. Skills, positioning and negotiation travel much better.

Match it to where you actually are

Getting a first job, changing field mid-career and going independent are three different problems that share a shelf. Material aimed at graduates often assumes no leverage; material aimed at consultants assumes an existing network. Read who the course says it is for before the syllabus.

For freelancing, look for the business half

Being good at the craft is not the same as running a practice. Pricing, scoping, contracts, chasing payment and finding the next client are the parts that determine whether freelancing lasts, and they are the parts most courses cover thinnest. A course that is entirely about finding your first client is only about the first month.

Be clear about what ongoing access means

Courses in this field often bundle a community, a group call or coaching. Those can be genuinely valuable and they can also end quietly. Where a provider states what ongoing access includes and for how long, the listing records it; where it is vague before purchase, that is worth noticing.

Standards

What we check in career courses

The published standard applies unchanged. This is the category where the misleading-marketing check does the most work.

  • That public marketing makes no promise about employment, placement, salary or freelance income, and that any student result quoted is presented as what it is rather than as a typical outcome
  • That the material advertised is the material delivered, including whether promised templates, reviews or coaching exist
  • That where coaching, community or feedback is part of the offer, its extent and duration are stated before purchase
  • That the total cost is clear, including where a course is the entry point to a much more expensive programme

A verification is never a prediction that you will be hired, win clients or earn anything. We assess the course and its public offer, not the labour market.

Questions

Career & Freelancing courses and verification

What about courses that guarantee a job?

A guarantee is a contractual claim, and its conditions are usually where the substance is. We examine how such promises are presented in public marketing, and a course whose offer is materially misleading does not become Verified. Read the conditions yourself before buying.

Do you check income claims from past students?

We check how they are presented. Selected results shown as typical outcomes are the specific problem, because the students who did not succeed are not in the sample and cannot be.

Do these courses apply in my country?

Anything touching contracts, tax or employment status usually does not travel. Each listing names the provider, and the summary says where a course is written for a specific market when the provider makes that clear.
